    When you think of the term elderly, what comes to mind? Do the words disabled and old come to mind, or do you visualize wisdom and patience? The word old is considered a “dirty” word in today’s society. However, we will all be old one day. Ageism - discrimination based on a person's age is a stereotype as well as racial or religious discrimination. We must end this way of thinking soon, otherwise our seniors will not feel welcome in their jobs and in their communities. Age discrimination in employment law has not been sufficient to curb ageism. Like all stereotypes, age discrimination views older people as unhealthy and lacking in competence. Companies' criteria for hiring, firing, and salary decisions are still based on age, even after the passage of the JOBS Act in 1967.
