    Hatshepsut – Part 1Hatshepsut was born in 15th century Egypt and was the first great woman in recorded history. Hatshepsut was the daughter of Thutmose I and Queen Ahmes. She had two brothers and a half-brother. Unfortunately, Hatshepsut's own brothers died while they were still young children and so she became something of an only child. After her father died when she was 12, Hatshepsut became Queen of Egypt when she married her half-brother and he became Pharaoh Thutmose. II. He was her father's son and one of his second wives. During the reign of Thutmose II, Hatshepsut assumed the traditional role of queen and chief consort. During their marriage, Hatshepsut and Thutmose II were unable to produce a male heir but had a daughter named Neferure. Because she was the first and principal wife and queen of Thutmose II, upon his death she proclaimed herself the fifth Pharaoh while disowning the old king's son, his nephew. The name Hatshepsut means “the first of the noble ladies” and to justify Becoming pharaoh, she claimed to be the daughter of the God Amon. She took possession of the Two Lands while dressing as a king with a false beard and traditional men's clothing. The Egyptian people seemed to accept her strange behavior and she remained in power for 21 years and nine months. Hatshepsut remained in power by constructing numerous buildings and monuments throughout Egypt. Hatshepsut built magnificent temples and restored many others as well, but eventually, when her nephew became an adult, he took his rightful place as pharaoh.
