  • Essay / Milton Cayette IIi: a native of St. James Parish

Milton Cayette III is a native of St. James Parish and currently resides in Gonzales, Louisiana with his wife Zianka Cayette and two sons, Kingston and Maddox Cayette . Mr. Cayette graduated from Ascension Catholic High School in 1999 and later attended Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, Louisiana. Mr. Cayette received his Bachelor of Arts degree in American Government and Politics and received his Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Police Science in 2004, as well as a minor in Psychology. Mr. Cayette has worked in the field of criminal justice for ten years. Mr. Cayette served five years as a parole deputy and is currently in his fifth year as a detective. He joined the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office in April 2006 and still currently works with the Sheriff's Office. Mr. Cayette has also been part of the SWAT/Crisis Intervention team for four years. He is a firearms instructor and hopes to become the future sheriff of St. James Parish. I asked Mr. Cayette to tell me what he believes are the positive factors associated with being a specialist in the criminal justice system. He said: “The benefit of being in the criminal justice system is that there is a fine line between order and chaos. In recent years, criminal justice professionals have been the subject of much surveillance. The majority of guys who are "called to do the job" have been profiled by the few guys who feel they can do the job as a law enforcement officer. A cop provides a sense of security to most people. When most people see a law enforcement officer, they feel safe, regardless of the situation. Despite the negative publicity the police receive, some officers are still seen as the good guys and keep order in the community. Being a police officer is still in the middle of paper......overall I think this interview taught me that every law enforcement officer has a different opinion and it needs to be expressed. Mr. Cayette told me exactly what he felt, without holding back. It was different listening to the answers because they were said by a real officer rather than just an ordinary person expressing how they felt. The interview also made me realize that people can't be angry at every police officer for the bad actions of a single police officer. According to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, “There are currently more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers in the United States, the highest number on record. About 12 percent of them are women. People should stop listening to the media all the time because it convinces them to hate police officers because there are many police officers in the United States with good intentions..
