    Electronic waste (e-waste) is any discarded waste created by discarded electronic devices. E-waste disposal has become a growing problem in countries around the world due to accelerating economic growth, urbanization and consumerism. They pose a serious threat to human health, largely because e-waste contains metals and persistent organic pollutants, leading to the release of harmful and toxic chemicals into the environment. It is estimated that 20 to 50 million tonnes of electronic waste are produced each year worldwide (Developmental Neurotoxicants in E-waste: An Emerging Health Concern. 2011: 431). It is therefore the fastest growing urban waste product. Electronic devices contain a wide variety of elements and chemical molecules – a cell phone alone contains around 40 elements from the periodic table. The toxicity of these elements can be very high, representing a major risk for pregnant women and the neurological development of their forming fetus.
