  • Essay / Suicide bombers: what motivates them? - 1684

Has anyone ever wondered how an individual could kill thousands of people without feeling bad? Thousands of people die every year from suicide bombings, but few people know why they do it. Furthermore, no one really questions the past or how the suicide attacks started. Someone didn't just wake up and decide to strap bombs on themselves and then detonate them inside a building full of people. This essay will discuss the history of suicide bombings, the training of a suicide bomber, the personality of a suicide bomber, the different motivations behind his action, and the impact of culture on the attack and the suicide bomber . In order to understand the motivations behind suicide attacks, society must understand the history. Suicide bombing wasn't really thought about until the 1980s, when a boy named Hossein Fahmiden died with a grenade in his hand during a battle. This incident began to change the way society viewed what the Quran said about suicide. People of that time thought it was bad, but their views began to change after Fahmiden's death. They believed it would help them and their families access their version of heaven, called paradise. By 1983, suicide bombings became part of their cultural beliefs. Society, before supporting suicide bombings, had a huge debate over whether or not suicide bombings were religiously supported. The Quran says that Muslims cannot commit suicide because they will not go to heaven. However, fighting and dying for his country makes him a hero. The suicide bombers of the time, and those still today, justify their actions by claiming that they are fighting for their country (MacEoin 15-24). One might wonder how one becomes a suicide bomber. Many people believe that these men... middle of paper ... culture is completely unhealthy for anyone and will only lead to future problems. Suicide bombers face a lot of things. Suicide bombers in Muslim society have high expectations and struggle to meet them every day. The history of suicide bombings is real, as is the debate over whether or not the Quran approves of suicide bombings. Suicide bombers are intelligent people that society would not give a second glance to. They have certain personality characteristics, but so do suicide bombers. Many people believe that they only bomb out of anger or because they are crazy. This may be the case for some, but the majority honestly believe that they are helping society. Their culture does not help them in this matter and even encourages suicide attacks. A combination of all these things is what motivates suicide bombers.
