    Turner's Thesis in the Modern United StatesEven though it was written over a hundred years ago, Frederick Jackson Turner's Frontier Thesis is still valid to this day. Turner developed his Frontier thesis as a way to determine where distinctly American characteristics developed. Turner said it was Western settlers who developed a unique identity by adapting and taming the frontier. Therefore, Turner saw this process as an evolution of a distinctly American culture – people who were not afraid to venture west to exploit resources. As these people moved west in search of resources, more settlements developed in the West. While the physical border is no longer present in today's America, it simply needs to be reinterpreted as a virtual space offering economic opportunity and limited government influence. As a result of this reinterpretation, it is evident that a new frontier has developed: cyberspace. While the physical border, or the unstable West, no longer exists today, a new frontier has emerged: cyberspace. Turner's thesis defined the frontier as a space of freedom, individualism, and endless opportunities for those willing to venture out and exploit existing resources. This same definition can be used to define cyberspace. The Frontier, originally, was seen as a new place to settle and exploit resources with minimal intervention from the U.S. government. Cyberspace can be considered comparable to the Frontier. Today's cyberspace is a place of limited government with unlimited opportunities waiting to be exploited. This is why the new frontier is in cyberspace. In cyberspace, Americans modify their skills and personality traits in order to capitalize and use available resources for personal benefit. This process not only defined how the Frontier became civilized, but it also explained the development of the characteristics of the ideal American. In response to their wild environment, the settlers developed some distinctly American characteristics.
