  • Essay / The Homeless - 1548

Removal of the homeless was an eye-opening experience for me. I had the opportunity to interact with several people and a family. First, I conducted a few interviews with them to help them complete the questionnaire; and the rest of the time, I escorted the individuals and helped them choose the objects they needed. As I spoke with each of them, I realized that the current state of these individuals was a product of the current economic situation. According to the National Homeless Coalition (2009), work-related factors are one of the many reasons why individuals become homeless. One of the people I spoke to informed me that he regularly worked 9-5 at a construction site, but now, due to the economy, he only works a few shifts and even those shifts are inconsistent. Information provided by the National Homeless Coalition (2009) regarding “why people are homeless” confirmed my idea that the growing difficulties in our economy have led to an increase in homelessness. The surprising factor that I neglected to visualize was the impact this had on children and families. When people think of the homeless, they often imagine elderly people on the streets. It is too painful to imagine children ending up on the streets, without food, water and shelter. One family I had the chance to work with consisted of a mother and her three children. She had two daughters aged 11 and 9 and a 2 year old son. She is currently unemployed and temporarily living with her mother. She is one of the lucky ones who has supportive family members, but there have been other stories of families living in cars and on the streets due to lack of support. The decline of jobs, the low level of paper. ....s, loss of their job, traumatic experiences, drug and alcohol addictions that led to a loss of who they were and the skills they had. The role of the occupational therapist is to seek out and help these people find their way home. It is important for occupational therapists to become involved with homeless people because the main goal is to identify the individual's profession and then develop their skills to help them. achieve their desired goal. The various models in the field of occupational therapy strive to understand and implement ways to restore the individual's occupations and tasks and help maintain a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally. The desire to address the cause with a holistic approach is one of the main reasons why occupational therapy is beneficial for people experiencing homelessness..
