  • Essay / A quick overview shows that children's toys are gender specific

Gender roles in toys are extremely obvious. The situation has not changed for so many years that we all comply and follow without question. Taking a trip to the local Toys R Us store showed me how obvious the line was between the sexes, showing a specific division between the two. The store layout clearly establishes the boundary between toys for girls and toys for boys. There are very few islands that mix within the sexes. For this project, I selected the following age groups: preschool, preschool, and school age children, with a focus on toys for girls. Baby toys are the only age group where the sexes mix. My first pick is Laugh and Learn Love to Play Sis. This stuffed dog features dominant colors of pink and purple, has a bow in his hair and wears a skirt. Sis has non-specific colors including blue, green, yellow and the dog is brown. This toy is marketed as a toy that can sing and teach the alphabet, numbers, and songs. The company offers the consumer this toy that will entertain and teach your young child, preferably a girl, at the same time. The second toy I looked at was the Wall & Roll Rider. This gender-neutral toy is marketed as a walking learning toy. This rider is touted as being good for both sexes. The packaging shows both a girl and a boy playing. The main colors of the Walk & Roll Rider are blue, yellow, red and orange. Next we move on to 3 Lil' Piggies Playhouse. This gender-neutral toy is presented as a shape learning toy for any infant. The packaging shows a white baby, no specific gender, wearing neutral-colored clothing, smiling and playing. The final toy for this age group was the Sit to Stand Music Skool. This gender-neutral toy shows a girl on the package, but with...... middle of paper...... the electronic puppet is just a new and interesting way for boys to disgust people. The fine line between boys' and girls' interest in toys is established very early in life. This segregation is created by parents showing children what to play with is socially acceptable for each gender. This segregation is also seen in movies and television shows. Ideally, it would be great to see a boy not get teased for wanting to play with a doll or a girl with a ninja warrior. It may be more socially acceptable for a girl to exceed the norm than for a boy. In my opinion the worst toy I found was the Uggly pet, this pet encouraged bad manners and virtually no imagination. The toys I found were the best were the movie character additions. These toys were gender neutral and would be socially acceptable for both sexes.
