In an address to the scholars of the Phi Beta Kappa society in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Ralph Waldo Emerson gave a speech in 1837 in which he stated that literature under European influence required scholars to memorize texts written by other writers. The speech was titled The American Scholar and the main idea of ​​his speech was that American literature should be completely different from European literature. Basically, scholars should have the freedom to write in whatever form they want and not copy the way other writers have already written. With this statement, Emerson reminded American citizens that their culture had been so changed by Europeans that people had already begun to forget their own culture. In this regard, Emerson reminds American citizens that since they won the war for independence against the Europeans, they now have the opportunity to begin any developmental activity again. Therefore, to start fresh in literature, Americans had to write in a new form that would be different from the way Europeans wrote and had taught Americans to write. Emerson asserts that the new form of writing can be achieved through the influences of nature, books, and action. He was therefore a transcendentalist. Emerson in his speech states that scholars should observe nature and write originally on their own and not memorize or copy the form of other writers' writings. In The American Scholar (1837), he declared that "men of talent, that is to say, those who start badly, who start from accepted dogmas, and not from their own vision of principles."
