  • Essay / The Making of a Revolutionary in Russia - 787

The life of Edward Dunes as a revolutionary during Russia's transition from a Tsarist state to that of a Marxist-socialist regime, was propagated by many situational influences/factors arising from his family's relocation. from Riga to Moscow. As a young boy in Riga, Dunes' thirst for books and a good education raised his potential to become a highly skilled worker. Dune's childhood upbringing, coupled with factory life in Moscow as well as an influential individual in his life with his father's working-class socialist views, made Dune the Bolshevik revolutionary he became. Besides his character as a child, Dune developed crucial skills outside of his formal education in Riga which opened up great potential for his future. As a young boy and throughout Dune's adolescence, his love of books was insatiable. Although the books Dune read were not political in nature, they were the foundation of Dune's interest in all things intellectual. However, there was an instance where Dune was reading in a park near his home when an older man suggested he read the book Diary of a Socialist. This book would raise new questions that Dune wanted answered. This moment would represent a transition to reading books of a political and social nature. Individuals who were able to read and were better informed about political and social issues often played a more important role during the Russian Revolution in organizing movements and educating the masses. Besides his love of books as a child, Dune listened to stories about factory life and heard leaflets printed by the Latvian Social Democratic Organization that his father read aloud in the evenings. Hearing these stories as a child and seeing the area around him...... middle of paper ...... conscious hysteria among Dune. Although it seems like Dune kept his cool throughout the remembrance, I suspect his true feelings towards Sapronov were more acute. As an influential member of the community, Sapronov was seen as a legitimate source of knowledge that Dune was drawn to. This mentor represented a crucial link in Dune becoming a Bolshevik and fighting as a member of the Red Guard. Dune had all the necessary requirements that individuals joining a cause needed to succeed. He had the drive, the education, the right atmosphere and, ultimately, someone with experience to nurture the revolutionary within him. The circumstances in which Dune presented himself in his book demonstrate his ideological change, from someone young and intuitive with free thoughts to someone with concrete values and actions..
