  • Essay / The Importance of Coral Reefs - 640

The charity I am researching for my compassion project is the Coral Reef Alliance. The cause of this charity is to help save coral reefs from dying. They are trying to stop overfishing, poor water quality, climate change and other harms. Coral reefs are an important part of the ecosystem and must be saved. They contain many types of corals and many different animal species. Coral reef grooves provide good hiding places for fish and other underwater species. Coral reefs are also known as the “rainforests of the ocean.” I like a quote from the book The Sixth Extinction: “Corals build the architecture of the ecosystem, so it's pretty clear that if they disappear, the whole ecosystem disappears. » Coral is a type of invertebrate made up of many polyps and they grow very slowly. They are related to sea anemones and jellyfish. Coral gets its color from zooxanthellae (zoh-oh-zan-thell-ee), which are algae. Climate change and pollution can cause stress on algae, which could lead to coral bleaching. Coral bleaching occurs when coral turns white. Coral lives in tropical waters around the world. They occupy less than 1% of the world's surface area. The largest coral reef in the world is the Great Barrier Reef, located in Australia. Coral reefs are home to 25% of marine life such as sponges, sea slugs, oysters, crabs, shrimp, marine worms, starfish, sea urchins, sea anemones, sea turtles and many species of fish. The Coral Reef Alliance is committed to six different locations (Fiji, Hawaii, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico and Palmyra) to improve reef management, reduce local threats to reefs and help communities benefit. This cause exists because of warming and rising seas, ocean acidification, overfishing, water ...... middle of paper ...... lived in the ocean. You can also be a responsible scuba diver, snorkeler, swimmer, or whale watcher. Coral reefs are very important! There are many books, educational films, and people trying to raise awareness about the problems in our oceans. Anyone can start helping to save the reefs by trying to stop all the damage affecting them and trying to use more energy efficient materials. Please take the time to learn more about how we can begin to care for coral reefs and the many animal species that live there. It's really fascinating. Another quote from The Sixth Extinction is: “If you don't have a building, where will the tenants go? » said Jack Silverman. This means that if there are no coral reefs, where will all the animals that are there go? This is something we really need to think about, even in our oceans, which then affect our world..
