    Eric Carle, a well-known children's book illustrator, was born in Syracuse, New York in 1929. His stylistic technique of piecing together hand-painted, cut-out and layered to create joyful images, made him and his work distinct and easily recognizable. He grew up in Germany but returned to the United States where his advertising career began, followed by his work as an illustrator. Due to Carle's love of nature and successful advertising career, his vibrant, simple, animal-filled illustrations are clear evidence that reflects his past experiences. Carle had a happy childhood in America. However, he moved to Germany with his parents at the age of six and attended the prestigious art school Akademie der Bildenden Künste. In 1952, he returned to New York to return to the happy place where he grew up. He was later recruited as a graphic designer by the New York Times before being drafted as a mail clerk during the Korean War. Upon his return, he worked as an artistic director for an advertising agency ("Eric Carle"). His first work as an illustrator was with a famous author named Bill Martin Jr. Martin asked Carle to illustrate his book after seeing an advertising article. he had made of a red lobster (“Eric Carle”). It was at this moment that his career as an illustrator truly began. Over the years, he not only enjoyed many artistic successes, but even wrote his own books. He is best known for his book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, in which bright colors, strange shapes, and unique cutouts are used throughout the pages. Carle has always had a love for nature; the majority of his books depict animals or plants.
