  • Essay / Internet usage among different genders of IIUM students

In the world of education, especially among students at higher education institution level, the use of internet as a means of Obtaining information is concerned. Oxford Dictionaries perceived the word Internet as: “A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication means, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. » The Internet is useful if students can use it for a particular purpose or in a particular situation. The usefulness of the Internet is perceived to be high because it provides packets of information and this technology can be found for free or at a lower cost than other methods. However, the usefulness of the Internet tends to diminish if it is found to be harmful or causes addictive behavior. Additionally, several attributes of the Internet may promote addictive behavior. These attributes include easy and flexible access around the clock, anonymity, providing a free, diverse and unlimited number of social networks without geographical boundaries. Excessive Internet use contributes to difficulties maintaining meaningful interpersonal relationships, the development of sleep problems, and reductions in daily activities (Anderson, 2001). Thus, excessive Internet use can reduce quality of life, especially in terms of academic performance. In the new perspective of the Internet, it provides a new means of communication that allows us to access vast amounts of communication on a wide range of topics. The content of the Internet itself offers more information than that of the world's largest libraries and its use is beneficial at the academic level (Kashiff et al., 2010).
