  • Essay / Revolution, cause and causes of the Americans...

(C&G 99) After the end of the French and Indian War, the English and the Americans decided to concentrate their efforts on the expulsion of the Native Americans from the Appalachians so that they could settle there. The Indians, however, would not willingly give up their territory. Pontiac, a chief from Ottawa, led the Indian tribes in an effort to force the settlers over the mountains. Although Pontiac was unsuccessful, the English government passed the Proclamation of 1763, which made it illegal to settle land west of the Appalachian Mountains. To the English, this seemed like the perfect solution. Not only did the Proclamation prevent clashes between Americans and Indians, it also helped stop the expansion of settlements, saving money that would have been spent on colonizing the country. The Appalachian shutdown caused great resentment among Americans, but the Sugar Act nevertheless caused great resentment.
