The short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner is about how the main character, Emily Grierson, copes with changes and maintains her relationships with society because of it. The narrator describes the strange circumstances of Emily's life and her relationship with her father, her lover Homer Barron, the town of Jefferson and the horrible secrets it hides. She has difficulty letting go of the past and accepting changes. In this story, Faulkner uses foreshadowing to slowly reveal these conflicts with the changes. Throughout the story, the narrator compares the two main characters, Mr. Grierson, Emily's father, and Emily's lover, Homer Barron. This is because Emily's relationship with her father foreshadows her relationship with Homer. Her father was the only one she had when she was young, so their relationship was very strong.
