    African Americans during World War I (1910-1919)The United States in 1910 was a society where racial segregation was the norm. Jim Crow segregation laws were enacted between 1876 and 1965 in America, separating many, if not all, public places for whites and blacks. African Americans were treated inferiorly and without respect. World War I broke out in 1914, sending millions of American troops to Europe. African Americans were sent alongside Caucasians to fight in World War I due to the lack of white soldiers in the army. Many African Americans felt like they had to prove their loyalty, respect, and gain equality in America by fighting in this war. African American soldiers sent to war wanted to prove their dignity as American citizens. World War I provided a unique and significant opportunity for African Americans. African American soldiers were sent overseas to Europe during World War I alongside white soldiers, when segregation and Jim Crow laws were still enforced in the United States.
