  • Essay / The Effect of Cell Phones on Health - 1301

Today's technologies are advancing at an astonishing pace. This can make it difficult for even the most passionate “techies” to keep up. Technology is that wonderful thing that brings comfort and convenience to our lives. But this comfort and convenience often comes at a price; and cell phone technology is no exception. Arguably, as a communication tool, the cell phone has no equal in the way it has changed and affected our lives. Above all, the effect has been positive in many ways. But, as with anything, overuse and abuse has brought out its dark side and unintended consequences. One of the unintended consequences of the cell phone is its effect on the health of its users and even that of those around them. What is the effect of cell phones on our health? Researchers are examining the health risks associated with cell phone use. This research focused on road accidents, germs, cancer, electromagnetic radiation and vision health. A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention focused on drivers distracted by their cell phones in the United States. According to the study, sixty-nine percent of U.S. drivers ages 18 to 64 reported talking on their cell phones while driving in the past thirty days. Additionally, within this same demographic, thirty-one percent of U.S. drivers reported reading or sending text or email messages while driving at least once in the 30 days prior to their survey. It should be noted that these percentages...... middle of paper...... our mouths. We can avoid cancer-causing RF on our phone by using hands-free devices as much as possible. We can keep our eyesight a little longer by limiting device use and eye strain. Last but not least, we should keep our cell phones in our pockets and purse while driving. If we need to make or answer a call, give it to a passenger, stop or wait until we reach our destination to use the device. Remember, when using your cell phone, think “safety first”; your health depends on it! Works Cited Borreli, L. (July 12, 2013). 5 reasons why cell phones are bad for your health.
