  • Essay / Animal Rights - 779

The idea of a Declaration of Animal Rights should have been born years ago and should already exist in our society. Animals are creatures capable of thinking and feeling just like us. Humans should not be legally allowed to keep farm animals in poor or unhealthy conditions, as is often the case. Animal testing should be subject to a specific set of rules and regulations to ensure that they are not subjected to harmful or unnecessary experiments. Finally, no animal should ever be forced to live in an environment where they are abused or neglected in any way by their owners. Animals used for agricultural purposes are often raised in very poor living conditions. In most cases, animals are crowded into extremely small quarters with others of their species, and smaller animals are kept in cages in which they cannot move. These types of environments do not respect their physical and psychological needs. A study conducted at Purdue University on pigs found that they crave attention and become easily depressed when isolated or neglected, leading to a decline in their health. In Europe, the insulation of pigsties was banned in 2012 after learning of these findings (Rifkin). The ASPCA states that some standard factory farm practices are: “Unclean air: Waste accumulates in barns, creating ammonia and dust. Ammonia is irritating and can even burn animals' eyes, skin and throat. Artificial lighting: Factory farms simulate unnatural day lengths to encourage rapid growth and desired behaviors. Unnat...... middle of paper ... everywhere are forced to endure horrible conditions and constant abuse until they are killed by these situations. No living creature should ever be forced to live like this and should be treated like the mentally conscious and emotionally fragile beings that they are.
