This essay will introduce one of many developmental theorists, Howard Gardner and his theory of multiple intelligences. We will talk about his journey. This essay will explain what his theory was and each of Gardner's seven distinct intelligences. He will also explain its importance in changing the way we learn and perceive new ideas. Howard was born July 11, 1943 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is professor of cognition and education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Howard has received honorary degrees from twenty-nine colleges and universities. He has twice been selected as one of the world's hundred most influential public intellectuals, by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines. Howard has twenty-nine books translated into thirty-two different languages. Howard Gardner's theory arises from recent cognitive research, meaning cognitive research by which is the mental act or process of perception, knowledge, memory, judgment, reasoning, as "contrasted with a deliberate emotional and intentional process , and “documents the extent to which students possess different types of minds and learn, remember, perform, and understand in different ways.” The seven distinct intelligences identified by Howard Gardner are: visual-spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, and logical-mathematical. If you are someone who has visual-spatial intelligence, they are likely sensitive to the relationship between line, color, shape, space and form, the ability to mentally manipulate and rotate objects , he is very aware of his surroundings. They also like to draw, do puzzles, dream, they can be taught by verb...... in the middle of a sheet... His theory has made a major difference in the way teachers and professors teach courses, and has helped us to better detect learning disabilities by allowing us to better understand the cognitive functions of the brain.
