  • Essay / The Reel Sisters: Fly Fishing Brings People Together

The Reel Sisters is a novel about the friendships created through a hobby of fly fishing. The novel contains many lessons about friendship, love, giving, and kindness. Author Michelle Cummings is a fly fisherman herself, and her recognition of her “kindred spirits” early on reveals the quintessential foundation of the book. The reel on the title could be an interpretation of the word "soul". Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on “Why Violent Video Games Should Not Be Banned”? Get an original essayA group of female fly fishermen from different demographics come together every fall to get away. Their main activity during the holidays is fly fishing. They stay in a small cabin built by Rose and her late husband. Rose becomes the main teacher and the wisest elder of the group. Each person's commitment to the other and like-minded people means they also support each other outside of fly fishing, navigating life together. The novel takes place in Colorado. The author uses first person narration with each character, making them equal characters next to the strongest character, Rose. Rose (over 60) is depicted as a strong elder who has experience and wisdom to pass on to the ladies. Sophie (over 40) owns a farm and runs a vegetable business through her greenhouse and also empowers people. Veronica (30) is married and transforming business leaders. Amanda (23) is the wife of a military officer, mother of two and teacher, and Melody (19) is a photographer and blogger. I like the pace of the novel because it is carefully constructed. The story does not lead to any single conclusion as the novel describes the lifestyle of each of these women. However, there is a shocking twist towards the end of the novel that readers should look forward to. It left me sad and confused. Yet, I felt that the sacrifice was necessary even though the characters in the novel felt like the time was not right to make this decision. I love how real the story was. There were also some moments that made the story feel unrealistic, especially when someone was narrating their own voice as they died. The author went so far as to write the character's last thoughts, which was wrong because I would have liked the novel to keep the same feeling of 100% reality throughout the novel. The novel is divided into sections 1, 2, 3 and up to 10. Each begins with quotes about fly fishing from different fly fishing authors. Each quote is relevant to the type of ending or lesson the characters and reader are to learn from the section. Fly fishing is also a sport with many life lessons and the author wants readers to connect with the characters through their experiences. For example, when you fly fish, you use the knowledge and skills you have acquired. However, you need confidence, focus and confidence to be able to catch the fish. Amanda was having a hard time missing her husband who had been deployed for some time. Sophie had problems with loneliness. Sophie and Amanda would focus on their problems and not be able to catch any fish. When they focused on their attitude, they had a better chance of catching fish. I loved following these lessons as intended by the author. Keep in mind: this is just a sample. Get a personalized article from our expert writers now.
