    Today's world is more interconnected and interdependent than ever before, primarily due to rapid globalization. The process of globalization began long ago with human migration and trade in goods (Chanda). More recently, the world has experienced three periods of rapid globalization. First, from the industrial revolution in Europe which opened up new resource lands in many other countries, which encouraged the flow of people and foreign investment for productions (Salvatore and Dominick, page 2). The second phase of rapid increases in international trade occurred after World War II, when the heavy trade protections put in place during the Depression era were dismantled (Salvatore and Dominick, page 3). Today, globalization is reaching another peak of development as telecommunications and transportation accelerate "the massive flows of international capital resulting from the elimination of most restrictions" across national borders (Salvatore and Dominick, page 4). Globalization represents the diffusion of culture, the movement of people, goods and services (YaleGlobal). Nowadays, the term globalization is becoming a controversial term with many evocative synonyms such as: Westernization or Americanization. Negative views blame globalization for sacrificing social and environmental well-being for corporate economic gains. On the other hand, proponents believe that globalization leads to efficient use of resources and greater product choice for end consumers. This article will seek to explore the extension of Western economic colonialism in the era of modern globalization. More specifically, the impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on Canada, the United States and Mexico are compared and analyzed.
