  • Essay / The Great Gatsby - 1133

“The loneliest time in anyone's life is when they watch their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare at him. »F. Scott FitzgeraldThe American dream: wealth, passion, power, love, a huge house, luxury cars, the most beautiful clothes. The American dream is something that people have strived to achieve for centuries. The Great Gatsby is a novel of twisted love triangles, whose characters attempt to capture and live the American dream. Dreams can fall apart when traveled for the wrong reason and in the wrong way. F. Scott Fitzgerald creates an ideal work of literature that shows the flaws, misguided beliefs, and ignorance of society in its belief in the American dream. The American dream is not something that a certain type of person can accomplish, it is something that has been anticipated and shaped by everyone, in all situations and in all social classes. Gatsby's dream was not the typical American dream, his was based on the fantasy that one could relive the past, that if he worked hard and made enough changes in his lifestyle he could win Daisy over. Tom. Gatsby underwent a remarkable change when he changed his name from James Gatz, the lonely soldier, to Jay Gatsby, a mysterious and wealthy man. It was Gatsby's attempt to reinvent himself and achieve his goals; showing how blinded he was to reality. Gatsby's entire dream can be centered around the green light at the end of Daisy's platform. It symbolizes Daisy in every way, it is green like the color of money which it must get so that Daisy can see it; he can see it from his dock in West Egg, it's barely out of his range across the bay, as is Daisy. While on the other hand Tom and Daisy Buchana... middle of paper......sful no matter where they come from, but one can be blinded by success and lose sight of their morals. For Gatsby, his dreams do not separate him from reality, but it is his way of life, his only goal and his only reason for living. For him, there is no line to distinguish good from evil, fantasy from reality, everything is tangled into one. Thus leading to his demise. Without dreams there is no hope, no goals or meaning in life, dreams give purpose. The American dream has expanded from a dream to following Jones' dream and always pushing for more, ideals clash with reality and ultimately end in failure. The Great Gatsby is a prime example of the corruption of the American dream and its decadent moral values. “The loneliest time in a person's life is when they see their whole world falling apart, and all they can do is stare.
