  • Essay / Theme of Blindness in the Cathedral by Raymond Carver

He showed no interest at first in meeting the "blind man" who was the "shadow" of his marriage, as he was consumed with jealousy because his wife was apparently more interested in Robert. than in him. There was one case where he was insensitive and his wife told him, "if you love me you can do this for me and if you don't love me, fine" (Gardner et al , 2013, p. 301). This outburst from his wife showed him that she truly cared about entertaining Robert and cared deeply about him. Despite all the signs indicated by his wife, the narrator was still “blind” towards her.
