  • Essay / Superheroes of Hope: Brubaker and Cool Hand Luke

Brubaker and Cool Hand Luke are different men on the same mission. Despite their different approaches, they stand for the same thing: reform and hope. Brubaker and Cool Hand Luke present themselves differently, through their actions, positions, and affiliation with the other prisoners. As the new warden of the prison, Brubaker could have been seen as just another person trying to inflict pain and punishment on prisoners. Luke, being the new guy, is easily just another Newcock. The difference between these men and all the others is the hope for a better tomorrow. Brubaker sneaked into the prison, even after he was made warden. No one in their right mind sneaks into a prison, least of all this one in Arkansas. He wanted to see what life was really like, instead of just hearing what other people said (Brubaker). Prisoners believed that one guard or government official was just as bad as another. They have no reason to believe otherwise. The prison was primarily run by slaves, using corporal punishment in everyday situations. These situations didn't even need a reason; Sometimes it was simply because Brubaker wasn't going to allow this to continue to happen. The first act he accomplished was to eliminate corporal punishment from the system. Speaking of the whip, he said, "See that? That thing is gone! Any worshiper who wants to go back to collecting rocks for a living, well, get caught using that on one of your charges." (Brubaker). This act gave the prisoners some hope. Finally, someone was defending them! The authorities did not pursue the same harmful practices. Brubaker did not cower; he was different from the others. He continued to remove unjust privileges and fight for the rights of all... middle of paper ... and right. He doesn't do it. He can't directly change policies that would make other people's lives easier and better, but he gives them hope that it can be done. It gives them hope that there will be conditions in which they will no longer be hurt and that the situation might improve. This is seen through his actions at the prison and in the fact that he has escaped several times. Both men give hope that tomorrow will be better through their actions. Their stories give that hope for the future not only to those who were present at the time, but to everyone who hears their story. They are superheroes, superheroes of hope. Works Cited Brubaker.
