    James Buchanan was born April 23, 1791 and died June 1, 1868. He was born in a log cabin at Stony-Battle near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. The house he was born in now stands on the campus of College Mercersburg Academy. His father was James Buchanan, Sr. and his mother was Elizabeth Speer. Buchanan was the second child of eleven. His parents owned a country store, and as he grew up he learned arithmetic and accounting while working in his parents' store. He then learned two languages ​​from the village pastor, Greek and Latin. Standing over 6 feet tall, he had broad shoulders, blue eyes and was very intelligent. Buchanan attended college at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. Shortly after starting school, he was expelled after breaking some campus rules. A few years later he was able to return to college and graduated in 1809 with high honors. After graduating, he decided to study law in Lancaster and began his career as a lawyer before joining the army to fight in the War of 1812. Buchanan was considered a reserved person when he first met him. , but once you got to know him, he was kind and friendly. Buchanan became interested in a girl named Anne Coleman, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of a wealthy iron manufacturer. Although they wanted to marry, they had an argument in 1819 that caused Anne to move to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. No one knew what the argument was about, but shortly after moving, Anne died. A few months after her death, it was rumored that she had committed suicide, but there was never any proof of this. Years later, still devastated by her death, Buchanan admitted that she was his one true love. After his death, he became heavily involved in politics. After Lincoln's inauguration, Buchanan retired to his home in Wheatland, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and followed the events of the Civil War. He believed his presidency was a success and even after his retirement he continued to be interested in the presidency. He thought his retirement would be temporary, but he died about seven years after returning to Wheatland. His business education made him a fortune, and at his death his fortune was $300,000.00.
