  • Essay / Strengths and Weaknesses of Psychologists - 1008

Looking at the history of the American Psychological Association (APA), we can see that minorities have had difficulty having their problems and needs recognized and addressed. As a result, they began to separate from the APA to develop their own associations. Over the years, the APA has faced a number of other problems regarding its organizational structure, graduate education programs, and other issues. Considering the competencies offered by psychologists, the APA developed six guidelines on multicultural education, training, research, practice, and organizational change for psychologists (2003). The guidelines are a general document that demonstrates the skills and knowledge necessary for practitioners working with diverse and rapidly changing populations. It also provides information that advances education. This article will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the Multicultural Guidelines as a whole. People in general, not just psychologists, perceive human interactions through their individual worldview. Our worldview is linked to attitudes and beliefs that influence the way we behave, interpret and perceive society. The paper encourages psychologists to increase their cultural awareness by learning how other cultures shape their worldview. I support and believe that these guidelines are necessary because when there are cultural differences between clients and psychologists, many problems can arise. Differences can lead to treatment discontinuation, communication problems and diagnostic errors. Psychologists are encouraged to understand the importance of their clients' customs, traditions and values. When a psychologist is culturally aware, it does not mean that their values, beliefs, and traditions must match those of their group...... middle of article...... the et al., 2013). White people often communicate messages of inadequacy and oppression toward African Americans and Latinos (Dale et al., 2013). The document does an excellent job of addressing all racial minority groups in the United States. The guidelines incorporate empirical studies and are designed to apply to everyone. psychologists. The document discusses the skills and knowledge needed by practitioners working with diverse and rapidly changing populations. The authors of this document have used valid evidence to strongly support each guideline, making it clear and understandable to the average person. Although this document has many strong points, there is still room for improvement. Ultimately, the document is a major asset to the APA because it educates practitioners to respect and recognize differences among other cultures.American Psychological
