    A popular view of stress is that everyone is distressed at work and little can be done. It also often feels like there are few lasting effects of stress. In fact, the opposite view is more accurate. If we are better informed about stress, we will not be forced to be among those who overcome mental health problems. Many consider stress to be unimportant in maintaining mental health. Yet research shows that work environment stress is a major contributor to health problems. Good education on the subject would consist of learning why and how stress affects us; the symptoms of the problem as well as the people most at risk; and finally what stress relief measures are available. I believe that being properly informed on the subject can have lifelong benefits to improve and extend life in and out of the workplace. High levels of distress over prolonged periods of time can affect our psychological or mental health. The chances of developing obsessive-compulsive disorder and related anxiety disorders INCREASE significantly WHEN YOU TRY TO MANAGE WORRY AND TENSION. IN FACT, the American PSYCHIATRIC Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual states that “anxiety is the principal characteristic of ALL NEUROTIC DISORDERS…” (GOLDBERGER AND BREZNITZ, P.573). THE MAIN AMONG ALL ANXIETY DISORDERS is obsessive-compulsive behavior. Dobson believes that trying to suppress certain negative FEELINGS OR ACTIONS MAY LEAD TO CONFLICT BETWEEN THE SUPER-EGO AND OTHER PARTS OF OUR PERSONALITY, and this conflict could eventually develop into obsessive-compulsive thoughts and behaviors (p. 146).
