    In Daisy Miller, Henry James introduces us to the nature of Daisy's character through her relationships with other characters, notably Winterbourne, one of the characters in the mail. Daisy Miller is a wealthy young American from New York who travels through Europe with her mother and younger brother. Daisy is spirited, independent and well-meaning, but she is also ignorant and provincial, which is almost ridiculous. She believes that Europe is "perfectly gentle", talks about the tiring details of her family's habits, and thinks that Winterbourne may know an English girl she met on the train because they both live in Europe. She has no social graces or gift of conversation, such as charm, wit, and she is really only interested in manipulating men and becoming the center of attention. The main character of the short story in James's work moves toward exploring the character of Daisy as a vehicle for the clash of American innocence and spontaneity with European proprieties and customs. Daisy acts on first instinct, naturally following her reflexes and acting accordingly....
