  • Essay / Fights and Flights - 904

Fights and Flights was performed by the STEPS Youth Dance Company. Choreographed for this piece were the works of Isabella Stone, Matt Cornell, Tyrone Robinson, Jessica Lewis with Kung Fu specialist Daniel King, Shona Erskine and Artistic Director Alice Lee Holland. The overall concept for Fights and Flights was first presented in late 2012 and began developing in early 2013. The actors began creating Fights and Flights in the studio in January 2014, exploring themes and ideas for the final performance . It took 28 days to create the entire piece. Fights and Flights celebrates 25 years of STEPS Youth Dance Company by inspiring, engaging and empowering young dancers to achieve their life goals in dance. The intention of this show was to celebrate life at its best and worst. Fights and Flights highlights the darkest moments of our lives such as the battles and challenges we face and the physical and mental obstacles that young people are subjected to and overcome. It also explores the brightest, most satisfying moments of our lives that led us to success. I believe the show was successful in depicting the concept of battles within ourselves. They achieved this through the fights and moments of freedom in flight throughout the show. I thought the beginning emphasized the “battle” theme by using martial arts moves and chaotic fight scenes between dancers. Fights and Flights was compiled of the actors' personal stories that they shared to create a play that showcased the experiences of their different ages and life stories. Older and more experienced professional dancers shared their personal stories as they overcame many challenges...... middle of paper...... Flight while escaping and enjoying. The lighting for the first part was dark as the theme was combat, which suited the Kung Fu choreography and chaotic battle scenes. In part two the lighting was brighter as the theme was flight, especially in Power and Promise this scene was colorful and had a more rhythmic tone as it was about being free. The costumes worn by the dancers were black with white straps across the chest and long black garments for professional dancers. The choreographer used the white straps to symbolize the seat belts that hold the body in shape to create strength. Overall, I believe that the STEPS Youth Dance company succeeded in delivering an entertaining piece that highlighted the fight and flight moments in our lives using many different techniques such as props, colorful and dark lighting, costumes symbols, choreography and entertaining music.
