  • Essay / Difficulties speaking English - 1337

Describe situations in which your use of spoken English has caused you problems. Either the person you spoke to didn't understand, or they received the wrong message, or they were even offended by what you said (even if that wasn't your intention). Analyze the situation and explain why communication is broken. You will need to think about your performance in the light of what the literature says about the pitfalls of learning English as a second language. People live in the world of communication. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Current English (Moore, 1997), communication is defined as “the activity or process of expressing ideas and feelings or giving information to people.” The importance of communication can be found in the context of human existence as a social being. As a human being manages his life through interaction among other members of society as a whole, communication is inevitable. Communication occurs through language and comes in two different forms: written and spoken (Brown and Yule, 1983: 1-10). The importance of oral performance of a language is becoming increasingly important compared to written performance ability. This is because the ability to speak a language reflects a person's personality, their self-image, their knowledge of the world, their ability to reason, their ability to express their thoughts in real time (Luoma, 2004: ix) . Nowadays, due to the global trend towards internationalization, the ability to communicate in English is an essential skill. Whenever an international exchange takes place, the use of spoken English involves. However, it is not always easy for people who use English as a second language to be able to express themselves at the level of a native speaker. They must fully understand the sound system of English, have near-instant access to appropriate vocabulary, and be able to place words together intelligibly without hesitation. Moreover, they must also perceive what is said to them and be able to respond appropriately to acquire friendly relations or to achieve their communication goals (Luoma, 2004: ix). As a result, non-native English speakers face these obstacles and are often prone to making mistakes. In relation to this question, this essay argues that there are sociocultural factors as well as linguistic factors that affect the English communication of non-native speakers. It provides an analysis of several different situations in which the use of spoken English generated miscommunication problems in relation to the author's personal experience..
