  • Essay / A braid of loneliness - 1300

“The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of not being loved. » –Mother TeresaA Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Michael Dorris is a novel about Native Americans, told by three generations of Indian women; Ida the grandmother, Christine the mother and Rayona. The stories of three people, “twisting, knotting and blending,” craft the braid of their relationship. Each of the three strands is a complex composition of hairlines. There is one hairline that all strands have in common that shapes this braid: loneliness. Throughout history, loneliness has played a crucial role in every character's life. This is the important cause of the characters' action. This shapes the relationship between mother and daughter. Ultimately, everyone's loneliness not only shapes that character, but also affects and causes the loneliness of the next generation. The first character who tells her story is Rayona. Being the last generation, she is at the bottom of the well of loneliness. After her parents separated, Rayona lives with Christine, her mother, who usually changes jobs and moves to her new home. As a result, she never stays at one school long enough to make friends. His life with Christine is also bitter. In Rayona's opinion, Christine doesn't take much care of herself. She said: “I try to remember what mum says when she is sentimental and alone: how he was the best, the only one, because he left me. How I am her sterling silver lining, the one who will never leave her like he did. Like she did for me. (64) She is disappointed by Christine's care which only exists in her speech. Lacking friends and warm family, Rayona suffered from loneliness. When she returns to the reservation with Christine to stay with Aunt Ida, Chris...... middle of paper ...... comforts her with the warmth of my body, to support her with the strength of my arms. But she didn't expect that from me, and I didn't give it. » Mother's loneliness is an unwanted gift. From generation to generation, the hair of solitude twists and knots the braid of this family. It clogs the hairline of love. It clogs the hairline from the treatment. This doesn't take this family's braid anywhere. Loneliness is a cell that prevents the mother's love from reaching the daughter, leaving her feeling unloved and alone. This evil hairline will continually distort the braid until they realize it. Until they realize that the solution is to turn around to face reality, hold hands and let the truth come out, then the loneliness that has lasted for three generations will disappear. The braid will be put into the right shape and bind the family members with love.
