  • Essay / Michel Eyquem de Montainge on the education of children

Michel Eyquem de Montaigne was born on February 28, 1533, at a time when only the rich enjoyed the privilege of a good education. Around 1539, Montaigne's father sent him to the Collège de Guyenne in Bordeaux, where, by the time he reached his thirteenth year, he had completed his studies under George Buchanan. Montaigne praised his educators and praised their teaching techniques, but rebuked the harsh discipline of most schools of his day. He said that if you visited a college where classes were taking place, you would hear nothing, except “the cries of beaten children and teachers drunk with anger”.1 In his work Les Essais, Montaigne highlights some very important elements . topics such as the need to teach children gently, make learning an enjoyable experience, and shape the child's personality. Although Montaigne's thoughts on education contrast with today's world, he understood the process of learning very well. His ideas can still be applied to educational theory today. One of the first things Montaigne mentions is to teach with understanding and tenderness. Montaigne said that “education must be carried out with gentle severity”2, instead of being “confronted with terror and cruelty3”. A student's hard work should always be rewarded, as it encourages them to study harder. A tutor's goal is to educate children with love, but he forgoes that goal when he uses fear to get them to study harder. Cicero mentioned that “the authority of those who claim to teach is often a positive obstacle to those who desire to learn. »4 Fear should not be used when raising a child; it can have a paralyzing effect on the mind. A child cannot think...... middle of paper ......s, among other characteristics already mentioned. Understanding the purpose of existence and having a good education are essential to living a good and moral life. When a child follows his interests, he can find a path to his career. Philosophy and history are valuable for a good education. Without a philosophy to teach us how to be sober, we will never learn how to live well. Without our knowledge of history, humans would fall into the same traps and mistakes again and again. It is essential that we know how and what to teach each generation. Using fear is not an effective teaching method because it can cause the mind to become still. Learning should be the greatest pleasure in life. Montaigne's essay On the Education of Children is beneficial for understanding how to accomplish the essential task of educating our youth with gentleness, joy and efficiency..
