  • Essay / No Child Left Behind - 2749

Helping children is the goal of most education instructors. Specifically, helping students learn better and recognizing those who need help earlier in their educational journey has been shown to increase student achievement. Laws like No Child Left Behind of 2001 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) of 2004 are examples intended to make schools more accountable by placing greater emphasis on helping all students learn by tackling problems earlier and more effectively. The Response to Intervention (RTI) process is one way educators attempt to accomplish this. Response to intervention is a new buzzword in the education world. This is an old idea that has found success in some schools. The research site intervention response model is an ongoing implementation. According to Batsche, RTI is defined as the practice of providing 1) high-quality instruction/intervention tailored to student needs and 2) using rate of learning over time and performance level to 3) make important educational decisions. As new ideas and methods emerge, things change (2005). With this in mind, the researcher plans to track the progress of six sixth-grade readers as they work on strategies to become better readers. Each student at the research site is placed in the reading class, with students performing at least two levels below grade level having the class at the beginning of the school year. This allows the student to spend “extra” time with the researcher if needed during the remainder of the school year. As a reading teacher, the researcher found articles on the effectiveness of RTI with struggling readers in order to better understand the process and better utilize the available methods. There are areas that...... middle of paper ...... reading program (2006, p. 103). Students at the research site have many opportunities to use the reading materials of their choice. The interventions in place are not tied to a specific reading program, but are based on real strategies based on assessment and research. SummaryIn this review, it appears that directed initial interventions work for students who are struggling reading. There is also an indication that supports true and reliable assessments for collecting data on these particular students. Data should advise instruction, not the other way around. Instructors should use the data collected to target specific student needs. Response to Intervention is a comprehensive approach to reaching struggling readers. The current research will study the influence of the RTI program on six students in the class..
