    You'd be hard-pressed to find one in a crowd. The average serial killer usually blends in (Directory Journal, 2010). In fact, most are gentle and even polite. Their monstrous nature only becomes apparent when you delve deeper into their personality, actions, and habits. Most appear to come from dysfunctional family backgrounds and were victims of emotional, sexual, or even verbal abuse as children (Directory Journal, 2010). It's almost as if this background activates a psychological trigger that increases their feelings of incapacity or worthlessness and leads them to seek their own abhorrent form of liberation. Often considered America's first serial killer, Aileen Wuornos was neither the first nor the worst. She was suspected of committing at least seven murders and was convicted in four of the cases she confessed to police.
