Drugs in the Mission by Jason MyersThere are three main issues when it comes to drug abuse, the first issue deals with psychological dependence on drugs, the second issue deals of the physiological effects of drugs on the human body, and the third issue deals with the psychological and physiological effects of drug withdrawal. The novel The Mission by Jason Myers capitalizes on the problems of drug addiction. Myers illustrates drug addiction through narrator Kaden Norris who is haunted by the death of his brother. The death of his brother leads Kaden to San Francisco where he is introduced to the novel's antagonist, drugs. After Kaden's repeated exposure to drugs, he realizes the consequences of his actions and the difficulty of regaining what he lost. Through Myers' novel, young adults witness the downward slope of drug addiction and experience first-hand the stages of temptation, abuse, and the psychological and physiological damage of drug abuse. This example that Myers constructed about drug abuse accurately represents the situation of drug abuse in the real world. Temptation is the first step toward drug abuse. Myers introduces the stage of temptation through peer pressure, which is also a prevalent gateway to real-world drug abuse. “Peer pressure has a strong influence on adolescents and, in many cases, a teenager first tries a drug because it was given to him by a friend” (Adamec). Myers illustrates peer pressure in the novel The Mission in the scene where Kaden is confronted with alcohol: “Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it...I mean, fuck it. How could I not do it now? In a room full of sexy, sweaty girls and the coolest guys in town” (Myers 93). This scene depicted by Myers shows Kaden at the center of peer pressure. Kaden snuck into the middle of the paper......and it came at a cost. Kaden told his girlfriend Jocelyn about the week he had lived in San Francisco and told her in detail about the sexual relationships with other girls and the criminal acts he had committed because of what drugs and alcohol had pushed him to do this. Kaden quickly realized shortly after Jocelyn hung up the phone crying that the relationship he had developed with her was over. In just a few minutes, Kaden overcomes his drug addiction, but at a price that wasn't worth it. People who use drugs and alcohol do not realize the effects and difficulty of the recovery process and the effects it can have on the people they love. In conclusion, this example that Myers constructed about drug abuse accurately represents the situation of drug addiction. abuse in the real world. Finally, Jason Myers accurately and accurately described the social problem of drugs and alcohol in the novel The Mission..
