Design my own dream city1. IntroductionThe notion of a sustainable city has taken a primordial place in contemporary urban planning. In the World Conservation Strategies of 1980, the concept of sustainable development was introduced for the first time. In the following part, the essay is divided into three major parts on sustainable pathways from different aspects. First, I'll give you a brief overview of urban planning. Second, transportation policy and planning will be discussed. Finally, I will be able to analyze the design of sustainable housing. Highlighting these three aspects would help to better understand the possible effects of sustainable development and raise public awareness of the natural environment. Before discussing how sustainable development can be achieved, it is first worth outlining the definition. 1.1 Definition of sustainable development “Development that meets the needs of the present with the capacity for the future generation to meet its own needs. » (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987) Sustainable development requires three key elements: the economy, society and the environment. Sustainable development can be successful by finding a balance between these factors. These three components are essential, they require us to depend on each other. Therefore, the government should cooperate with developers to renew some used land to provide more social housing, which would allow more needy people to live in the area and address overpopulation issues without harming the precious environment. Taking Tak Long Estate as an example, its area is about 300 hectares with a capacity of 90,000 people, which can accommodate more than 10% of Hong Kong's total population.
