POSC 100 Paper #1Joshua Han [email protected] In recent years, a number of events have highlighted growing economic and political inequality in the United States. The now-disbanded Occupy movement focused public attention on the ridiculous progress made by the wealthy, whose incomes have soared over the past four decades. Those on middle and poor incomes have unfortunately seen their income stagnate. According to Caroline Fairchild of the Huffington Post, middle class incomes are constantly declining. In 1968, the middle class earned about 53.2 percent of the national income. This figure has now fallen to 45.7 percent. Super PACs became a concern as more and more individual donors happily wrote huge checks to support their particular candidates. As a result, it highlighted growing political inequality, while underscoring the ability of the wealthy to make their words carry far more weight over the average citizen in America.
