  • Essay / Federal Trade Commission: Consumers and Advertising

Every day, consumers are confronted with hundreds, if not thousands, of advertisements. One can simply sit in any public space and spot a multitude of them without even moving their head. With so many ads struggling to make themselves visible to consumers, it's extremely difficult to stand out. It is even more complex to make an ad memorable and get the consumer to make the desired purchase. For this reason, many advertisers and marketers sometimes push the boundaries in an effort to stand out from the crowd. The United States has a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) composed of five commissioners appointed by the president with the goal of combating the falsity, exaggeration, and misimpression of some current advertisements (Cornell). In 2002, Interstate Bakeries, best known for its Wonder Bread product, became one of the companies sued by the FTC for false claims about their product in their advertisements (FTC Cases). This article will seek to explore the FTC's claims, the possible legal issues involved, and the FTC's decision following its investigation. According to the Livestrong Foundation website, bread actually has some health benefits that have been scientifically proven. It says it's best to eat whole wheat bread for more health benefits, but both still contain thiamine, folate, manganese, selenium and fiber, all of which are essential nutrients to a healthy and balanced diet. The website goes on to mention other health benefits of bread, particularly whole grains, but never once mentions calcium as an added benefit. This is important because Wonder Bread's claims focused specifically on the calcium found in their bread and the benefits calcium would have if it were in the middle of paper...... products and services they use. An “average” person needs truthful, non-misleading advertising to be able to make a fair and accurate decision about what to use or buy. Obviously, most people who were told that eating a certain type of bread would improve their mind, body, and memory would certainly eat it over another bread. This is very serious because it is extremely misleading and some would even say that bread does the exact opposite. It is even more critical because of the relationship with people's health. This is a topic that is of the utmost importance to everyone. In conclusion, the FTC made the right decision to go after Interstate Bakeries and its advertising agency to ensure that this type of marketing does not occur in the future. It is essential that the Commission continues to do so to protect the public from misleading advertising..
