  • Essay / Negative Effects of Smartphones - 1496

The twentieth century brought many innovations to the technological world and forever changed the way we live. Technological advances are changing the way we communicate, learn and think. This transition to a tech-savvy lifestyle that appeals to everyone also has many drawbacks. The digital world is addictive and the invention of the smartphone has brought many side effects such as lack of sleep. Many studies have been done to prove this and that is why it needs to be addressed. Constantly connecting with the world through a digital device has made humans feel obligated to follow this so-called lifeline. Because it has this effect, it consequently compels people to use it at any time of the day. We are all humans and we have instinctive patterns in our brains due to our biological origin. For example, we humans wake up during the day because sunlight signals the brain to wake the body and feel alert. To address this problem, Michael Herf, the creator of online photo sharing software Picasa, came up with an inventive solution. He developed computer software called f.lux “that automatically changes the intensity and spectrum of light emitted by the screen depending on the time of day” (Gale). This technology would benefit the smartphone-addicted daily worker and prevent possible degradation of sleep quality and productivity during the day. The benefits of sleep are way overrated and as preventive medicine doctor Kshamica Nimalasuriya says, “Restorative sleep is known to reduce stress, strengthen your immune system and sharpen your memory.”..”
