  • Essay / Guenever Love Triangle - 1125

Nowadays you hear about people being wrong and dismiss it as nothing. Back when TH White's, The Once and Future King was set, it was as sinful a crime as killing a person. Guenever is a heartless and complicit woman, who escapes "murder" simply because she is the Queen of England. Throughout the book, Guenever is characterized as weak and evil, as her decisions and behavior negatively affect Arthur, Lancelot, and herself. To begin with, Guenever manipulates Lancelot's feelings. It represents the majority of his problems and dilemmas. Lancelot tries not to betray Arthur's trust and to save his virtue, but his love for Guenever makes his decisions even more difficult. She said to him: “‘Come back soon’” (340) and left as she pleased. This affects Lancelot's ability to maintain his integrity, as Guenever confuses him by giving him mixed signals. She makes him think about going against Christianity and the idea of chivalry, two things he experiences. “You won it and you broke it. What are you going to do with him next? said Elaine (396). Lancelot is confused and he can't focus on anything other than Guenever, no matter where he is. She breaks him emotionally, to the point that he begins to hate himself for loving her. Then, when Guenever discovers that Lancelot and Elaine are sleeping together in his castle, she goes crazy. “'Get out of my castle,' cried the queen at the top of her voice. “Never show your face again, your evil, ugly, bestial face”” (395). Being told this by his beloved causes him to lose his mind, leading him to jump out of the window. Nobody knew what happened to him. A few years later, when Lancelot was living with Elaine, the mother of his child... middle of paper... close friends. In total, twenty knights were killed, including Gaheris and Gareth, who were unarmed. Their deaths and Guenever's illegitimate relationship are grounds for starting a war. This war ultimately resulted in the death of King Arthur. Guenever made Arthur's life more difficult, rather than supporting him like a good wife should have done. Guenever not only affects Arthur and Lancelot negatively throughout their lives, but also many people around her. She is Arthur and Lancelot's greatest weakness. Guenever gets herself and the people around her in trouble and makes their lives miserable in one way or another. Ultimately, Guenever's poor judgment and decisions she made were the source of many problems and controversies. Cheating on someone you love was much more scandalous then than it is today, but it's still not the right thing to do..
