  • Essay / An Analysis of Deep Blue Sea - 541

An Analysis of Deep Blue SeaI am doing an essay on the opening sequence of the movie Deep Blue Sea, I will analyze the way the director creates atmosphere and suspense. The film is about killer sharks and is in the same genre as Jaws. The opening scene begins with four people on a boat, there is virtually no dialogue in this scene as the audience does not need to know who the characters are as they are only there to introduce the shark and play no other role in the film. Also in the opening scene there is a lot of editing, and each shot only lasts a few seconds, giving a feeling of disorientation. All shots in the water are filmed from the point of view of something moving toward the boat using a distorted lens, and there is no shot of the creature in the water until the very end of the scene. The director filmed this scene at night and used a long line of moonlight because darkness is associated with fear and I think if this scene was filmed during the day it would have a lot less atmosphere. The first shot begins with a long-distance aerial view. filmed directly on the sea, at this point the sea appears almost black and menacing, the camera slowly zooms in until a tall ship is visible, there is music very similar to the jaws film with a repetitive sequence playing at several times it gives a feeling of unease. The shot then cuts past the boat and features an underwater view looking down at the boat, which makes it seem like there's something underwater and starts to prepare you for what's going to happen later. The music then gets louder and ends with a dramatic chord that continues. the feeling of unease. The next shot is on the boat, there is steady pop music and pans of four young adults having fun. The shot then cuts to another underwater shot with dramatic music from the shark's point of view beginning
