    The Holocaust was a horrific period during which incredible criminal acts were carried out against Jews, Gypsies and other racial groups. These defenseless individuals were sent from unsanitary ghettos to death camps, including Auschwitz. The Auschwitz extermination camp consists of three camps, all located in Poland. Many forms of extermination have been implemented over time to speed up the killing process. Life in the death camps was cut short for those who were not fit for work; such as the elderly, women, the mentally handicapped and young children. The others were put to work while starving. Experiments were carried out on dwarfs, twins and other misfits were carried out by Josef Mengele. These inhumane acts against the Jews were all kept secret by the Nazis until the day of liberation. Before the Jews were taken from their homes and placed in the ghettos, they were brutally targeted by the Germans. They were forced to wear yellow armbands with the Star of David so that the Nazis would label them as Jews. Ghettos were closed neighborhoods where the Germans forced Jews to live in miserable conditions. Ghettos isolated Jews by separating them from non-Jewish communities. After the ghettos, Jews were sent to concentration camps, Auschwitz being the largest of its kind; Jews were driven in small covered wagons and deported to death camps to be exterminated.
