Harry doesn't have a room where he lives under the stairs. The party ends up going to the zoo to celebrate Dudley's birthday when Harry causes the glass to disappear uncontrollably and Dudley falls into the boa constrictor's pit. Harry is blamed for the incident. Soon these mysterious letters start appearing addressed to Harry. Mr. Dursley tries to keep them away from Harry, but his attempts fail and the letters appear through every crack. Mr. Dursley ends up taking his entire family to a remote island on the eve of Harry's 11th birthday. In the middle of the night, they hear a loud bang as Hagrid enters and hands Harry a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry then learns that the Dursleys lied about his magical powers. The next day, Hagrid takes Harry to London to get supplies. First, they go to the wizarding bank and Harry discovers that his parents left him a lot of money. They shop at a place called Diagon Alley, where Harry gets a school uniform, books, potion ingredients, and a magic wand; a twin of the evil Voldemort. A little later, Harry is eating with Hagrid and he asks how he got that scar on his forehead. Hagrid doesn't want to tell him but tells him about Voldemort's tragedy. He says some wizards go bad and he was one. Anyone who didn't join him, he killed. One night he tried to recruit Harry's parents but they refused so he killed them. He went to kill Harry but saw something then left him with a scar on his forehead. Hagrid tells Harry that there has been no sign of Voldemort since. A few days later, Hagrid takes Harry to the station. He must cross a wall to access platform 9 ¾. On the train, he befriends a boy named Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. When they arrive at Hogwarts, they must put on this hat which will assign them to that house; Harry hopes he doesn't have to go to Slytherin house. Then the friend enters the Gryffindor house. As the year goes by, he discovers that his potions teacher Snape doesn't like him. Hagrid tells Harry that there is no reason for Snape not to like him but he insists anyway. During their flying lesson, they are told to stay on the ground, then Draco Malfoy takes a toy from a boy and flies into the air. Harry demands that he give it back. Malfoy throws the toy in the air and Harry goes to get it. When he comes back downstairs, Professor McGonagall takes him to see the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team and recommends that he be their seeker. During Halloween, a troll is spotted at Hogwarts and so all the children are escorted to their dormitory. Harry and Ron escape to find Hermione who did not know the troll to take her to her room. While they are there, the troll arrives to attack. Harry climbs back onto the trolls and his wand goes up the troll's nose. Ron uses a spell and crashes the troll club onto the troll's head and kills the troll. All the teachers are shocked and give them points for their house. At Christmas, Harry receives his father's invisibility cloak and decides to explore the school at night. He discovers the Mirror of Erised which shows desires.
