  • Essay / Stereotypes in the Media - 616

Stereotypes in the MediaStereotypes are generalizations or assumptions about people in a group, based on a perceived image or idea. There are many ways people stereotype, including racial, gender, ethnic, and even professional. Stereotyping can take place anywhere; school, work, newspapers and even television. The TV show “The Big Bang Theory” is a perfect example of a show that depicts many stereotypes. "The Big Bang Theory" is a television show about two brilliant physicists, Leonard and Sheldon, geniuses at the workings of the universe and the laboratory, but socially awkward when it comes to everything else. Their lives change when a beautiful, newly single young woman, Penny, moves into the apartment across the street from theirs. Penny quickly becomes part of Leonard and Sheldon's social group, which includes the equally socially awkward Howard and Raj, because Leonard has fallen in love with her. Thanks to Penny's common sense and social skills, the four male friends soon discover that they really know little about the world around them. Many stereotypes are used throughout the series. One of the first stereotypes introduced is represented by Leonard, Sheldon, Howard and Raj. These four men would be described as “nerds”; socially awkward, unstylish and unattractive. The men in this series aren't the only ones to be described as "nerds." Amy, another physicist, is very intelligent when it comes to the universe around her, but she too is unattractive and doesn't know how to go about attracting men. Another stereotype that includes the image of "nerds" is Raj. He has a problem when it comes to talking to women, he can't. He freezes and just looks at them, sometimes he even walks away or gets ...... middle of paper ...... al attitudes. Stereotypes used in "The Big Bang Theory," such as gender roles and race, can lead to bullying those who are intellectual and continuing to favor those who are beautiful. This can lead to discrimination since the "dumb blonde" stereotype shows that all blondes are stupid or stupid. Social media includes many forms of stereotyping; race, gender, ethnicity and even occupation. Many television shows today feature some form of stereotypes. Stereotyping can lead to prejudice and discrimination simply by showing that everything is acceptable through television shows. Although stereotypes can most likely be harmful to the individual or group, they will likely continue to be used in the future. Works Cited Feist, GJ & Rosenburg, EL (2012).
