Women at WorkThroughout the 20th century, women had to fight harder to advance in male-owned workplaces. Faced with obstacles such as discrimination, falling salaries and lack of leadership positions, how can women compete with men? Are women accepting of society's treatment or is this how it should be? Certainly not! This is why women are fighting back. In today's society, women are more active in our workforce than ever before. In recent studies (Sociology Text Book), women have taken the lead in starting their own businesses, but they lag far behind their male counterparts in corporate leadership positions. The U.S. Department of Labor's Women's Bureau lists the top 20 occupations for employed women. Among these occupations, which include teachers, nurses and secretaries, women outnumber men by more than 80 percent. Some of the other occupations that women do more than men include retail sales associates, customer service representatives, and office clerks. Women and men have traditionally worked in different specific occupations within the occupational category, a trend that continued in 2005.
