    Song of Solomon is a novel about Milkman Dead and the story of his late maturity. Milkman is a 32-year-old man unable to make choices about his life, thus finding himself trapped by the circumstances of his life. However, he is not the only member of the Dead family unable to cope with his situation, this seems to be a problem that all members of the Dead family face. Milkman is a privileged and pampered man within the black community. However, outside of the black community, he is limited by his status as a black man, making him unable to progress further in the world. Although limited by his race, Milkman's father Macon managed to make a name for himself, but it came at a cost. Morrison portrays Macon as evil and hateful, although throughout the story the reader develops sympathy for him when he learns that his father, the first Macon man, was the victim of a terrible crime.
