  • Essay / Lost in the Fog, Memoir of a Bastard by Rachel Van Meers

The main character, Rachel was born without a father and to a mother who doesn't care about her, telling her "she's a nail in the his coffin.” Rachel's mother also sometimes beats her violently. Rachel is mainly raised by her grandparents and aunts and uncles while her mother works in a factory called The Congo. Rachel's mother agrees to marry Alfred Caluwaerts because he doesn't mind her having a daughter, to give Rachel a last name, and to tell everyone that Rachel had a father. However, Rachel doesn't view him as a father because he didn't talk to her and just wanted to get rid of her. However, Alfred soon leaves due to Rachel's mother's constant controlling attitude and cheating with Geoffrey Voorst. Rachel's mother leaves the church and moves in with Geoff who didn't have a job. When the Nazis invaded Belgium, Rachel's mother and Geoff both joined the SS. Additionally, at Rachel's first communion, she did not receive a missal that the other children received because she was a bastard, and she remembered that day forever. Geoff takes most of the money they were supposed to receive from the SS. Rachel's mother got pregnant every time Geoff returned from leave. One day, while Geoff was back on leave, Geoff was mistreating Rachel's mother and was in agreement with Rachel, so Rachel spat on his uniform. This action landed Rachel in a German camp, and Rachel later discovered that her own mother had signed papers allowing her to be taken to the camp. In the camp, Rachel is mistreated and used for forced labor on a farm. Rachel leaves the camp when she falls ill and is taken to the hospital and helped by nuns and priests who, when she discovers their secret, no longer love them. Rachel is also helped by Charles the fa...... middle of paper......life. I really did it. But then again, something stopped me and said, “No, no, no, no, this is not the way to go.” » There must be somewhere, there is someone who can come and get you. (137). Rachel was strong and even after what she had been through; she knew she just had to be stronger. Rachel is a great role model who shows strength and sends a message of never giving up and fighting to both men and women. Rachel also sends the message of faith and how that gives strength. Rachel is also an inspiration to many people who have faced the cruelties of life. Even through what Rachel had experienced in her past with her religion, she didn't let it define how she viewed her religion. Rachel's heartfelt story, unique story style, messages, and inspiration make Lost in the Fog a great book for everyone to read. Which would leave messages stuck with the reader after dropping it.
