    The film "Basketball Diaries" is based on a series of diary entries written by Jim Carroll during the early years of his life, these entries would later be published in of novel. Growing up in the slums of New York, Carroll was exposed to numerous cases of substance abuse, and due to his life filled with stress, such as living in an unstable home without a father and losing his best friend, he began to indulge in drug addiction. As a teenager, Carroll was willing to go to extreme lengths just to fit in with his peers. He was an avid basketball player who seemed devoted to the sport and knew how to teach others what he knew about the sport. From the opening scenes of the film, we can tell that Carroll was a very impressionable teenager. Like many teenagers, Carroll was left open to the influences of his environment and therefore went astray because instead of trying to guide him down the right path, older people led him to what would inevitably become its destruction.
