  • Essay / The National Security Agency - 1278

The National Security Agency was created as a unit responsible for deciphering coded communications during World War I. It is an old and one of the largest American intelligence organizations. It falls under the Department of Defense and reports to the Director of National Intelligence. Its responsibility is to protect the U.S. government's communications and information system. It accomplishes its mission by bugging electronic systems, using subversive software to sabotage and intercept people's telephone conversations and Internet communications. Even financial transactions between banks around the world were accessible to the US government through SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Transactions). The activities of the NSA must be viewed positively because measures to diminish the NSA's ability to protect our freedoms will compromise our security. The less information the NSA has, the more likely the president is to make bad decisions, endangering the safety of Americans. Thus, the greater the mass of information, the better the decision to be made. It would not be wise to diminish the power of the NSA because it would encourage individuals or groups who harm Americans. Freedom and security are inversely proportional. Additional security always comes at the expense of freedom. Protecting privacy and reducing discomfort would mean greater exposure to significant security breaches. That's what we don't want. The invasion of an individual's privacy can be embarrassing due to the interaction of phone calls and computer users. But the NSA cannot legally use the information it has collected through surveillance to deprive anyone of their rights without justifiable reason. For example, if you are a drug dealer or petty thief and the NSA knows about this... middle of paper ...... you are concerned that their data could be intercepted. It also harms industry, businesses and consumers. The NSA has both advantages and disadvantages, as we discussed above. Personally, I think the NSA should continue to serve. Our security comes before our freedom. Would you rather die or would you rather protect your data? NSA surveillance is for our own safety. The media just creates hype and makes a big scene out of it. People need to understand that the NSA is just collecting your data, not listening to your phone conversations or reading your texts. They simply examine people exhibiting alarming behavior. If you haven't done anything wrong, you don't have to worry. Considering their previous record, they managed to stop 42 to 50 terrorist plots. Just imagine if there was no NSA we would have 42-50 attacks like 9/11. People need to understand that the positive aspects of the NSA.
