The Dark Side of the Influential Leader, GandhiOnce ----- said, “Just as there are two sides to every story, there are two sides to every person. One we reveal to the world and the other we keep hidden inside” (____). Just like the great and unforgettable leader Mahatma Gandhi. Who was the real father of the Indian nation? Was Gandhi who we thought he was? Gandhi was and will always be known to every child, every young man and woman, and every spirit of an old man and woman. He will always be portrayed as a noble leader who spent his life fighting for justice through “satyagraha” – attaining the truth. In contrast, there is a second face to the person we all adore. A face that was not known as 'Mahatma' or 'Bapu' that we all recognize and revere. This side, which has been highlighted by several renowned historians and writers, was unfortunately a side that none of us would have imagined from a courageous, kind and gentle leader. Even though India's founding father Gandhi was a great leader, there are other little-known aspects of his life, which are yet to be exposed. Was Gandhi the “Mahatma” – a holy person – that everyone thought he was? Some historians claim that Mahatma Gandhi treated women abusively, in ways that individuals do not recognize. Everyone singled out Gandhi as the man who led India to its independence, a man who would be a sensible, loving and caring husband to his wife and to all women in general. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, universal symbol of nonviolent resistance and towering leader of Indian nationalism, had another side, one that most of us do not know. A more human one.
